PROFESSOR DAVID OLIVER
Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine (retired) Professor David Oliver is a retired Consultant Physician in Palliative Medicine and is an Honorary Professor at the Tizard Centre at the University of Kent, at Canterbury and a Fellow of the European Academy of Neurology.
He has lectured and published widely on neurological palliative care, particularly on the care of people with Motor Neurone disease/amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and was the Chair for the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence Guidelines on MND. He is also Chair of the EACP Reference group.
Palliative care is increasingly recommended for the care of people with progressive neurological disease and is now included in many disease-specific guidelines.
This presentation will consider the role of palliative care in the care of people with neurological disease – care provided at all levels, primary care, neurology teams and specialist palliative care. The development of collaboration across all areas and involvement in multidisciplinary teams should enable the palliative care approach throughout the disease progression to be more widely available, and patients and families to have an improved quality of life and quality of dying.
