RICHARD EGAN – Assoc. Prof. in the Department of Preventive & Social Medicine, Dunedin School of Medicine, University of OtagoA/Professor

Richard Egan, is a co-director of the Social and Behavioural Research Unit and former director of the Cancer Society Research Collaboration. Richard’s research primarily focuses on qualitative research in the areas of health promotion, supportive care in cancer, and spirituality in healthcare. He has collaborated on over 60 peer-reviewed publications and completed a Master’s thesis on spirituality in New Zealand state schools and a PhD thesis on spirituality in end-of-life care.

This presentation will discuss:

Nurturing the spiritual well-being of healthcare sta  is crucial as it has a direct impact on patients and their families. In hospice and palliative care, spirituality is explicitly acknowledged and included as a vital aspect of care. However, there is a risk that spirituality can be reduced to a mere checkbox exercise, which can lead to spiritual distress for both patients and sta . What if we viewed our work, policies, procedures, and interactions through a spiritual lens?

This conversation, initially developed at the 2022 Hospice NZ conference, builds on the legacy of Cicely Saunders and hopes to engage hospice staff and healthcare professionals across the country.
