Critical thinking is a core skill that is essential for all healthcare practitioners. The key elements are part of clinical decision making, embedded in best practice, and often undertaken unconsciously. While most clinicians are familiar with the theoretical process, at least to some degree, there is opportunity to develop a more focussed and intentional practice which increases the capacity and individual potential.

This session will:
• Review the basis for critical thinking, revisiting (briefly) the rationale and resources necessary to enable this to occur in the practice setting
• Consider how to translate that ‘critical thinking’ into action, how to speak up, (and when)
• Recognise the role and response to biases, challenges that limit the ability to think critically
• Show the importance of critical thinking tools such as ethical reasoning, cultural safety, reflection, and situational awareness.
