DR DEAN RUSKE, MBChB FRACS

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is now a leading cause of oropharyngeal cancers, with increasing incidence in Aotearoa New Zealand—particularly among younger people and those without traditional risk factors.

This webinar will explore the link between HPV and head and neck cancer, including key risk factors, signs and symptoms, diagnostic pathways, and important prevention strategies. This session is designed to support primary and community healthcare professionals—including GPs, nurses, dentists, health promoters, and school health teams—to increase knowledge of all HPV related cancers, recognise early signs of disease, refer appropriately, and understand the role of HPV vaccination and awareness in cancer prevention.

Dr Dean Ruske is a New Zealand-trained Otolaryngologist and Head & Neck Surgeon, and is the Clinical Lead of the Dunedin Head and Neck MDT.

Dr Samantha Murton is a Wellington-based GP and Senior Lecturer at the University of Otago. Sam is recent past President of the RNZCGP and chairs the Council of Medical Colleges.
