PROFESSOR ALLAN KELLEHEAR

Allan Kellehear is Professor in Health & Social Care at Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the UK. Allan has worked as a full professor in Australia, Japan, the UK, and the USA and is widely recognised as founder and one of the leading advocates of the international public health movement in palliative care, also known as the ‘compassionate community’ or the ‘health promoting palliative care’ approach.

This lecture will introduce the public health approach to palliative care outlining the main reasons why these strategies should be central to our palliative care practices and will go on to describe some key explanations and examples. We will review the main popular public health approaches to palliative care including compassionate communities and cities, health promotion, end-of-life/death literacy, service redesigns, and civic policy development. All these strategies underline the public need for all sectors of society to contribute to palliative care.
