MAUREEN WATSON, NZ National Eyebank, Dept of Ophthalmology, University of Auckland

Maureen joined the NZ Eye Bank in 2020, after many years working in a research group at Auckland University. She was attracted to the role knowing the positive impact on people’s lives, and that it would be a privilege to be involved with donation and the giving of gifts between families.

Many New Zealanders are not aware that eye donation is an option, and it is not widely discussed or offered. Corneal transplantation has restored vision for hundreds of New Zealanders, and this is why eye donation is commonly referred to as giving the ‘gift of sight’. Other eye tissues are also transplanted and used in surgeries for glaucoma and eye reconstruction. These transplants would not have been possible without the generosity of donors and their families.

This presentation will:

• Provide an introduction to the NZ Eye Bank
• Explain the importance of eye donation
• Detail the steps involved in the donation process.
