DR AMANDA EVANS – Paediatric Palliative Care Specialist, Mary Potter Hospice

Dr Amanda Evans is a Paediatric Palliative Care Specialist working at Mary Potter Hospice caring for both paediatric and adult patients. She is a leader in paediatric palliative care in Aotearoa being on the executive of ANZSPM representing paediatrics. Amanda has a special interest in childhood bereavement. Her experience includes teaching health care providers to create space for, talk to and overall ‘care for’ children of their patients. She has developed the Children’s Support Team for Mary Potter Hospice which has increased visibility for children, offering parents skills to talk to their own children and give children access to bereavement support if required.

About the presentation:

Children’s grief, is a public health issue that warrants focused attention and a higher priority. Parental and sibling loss is a known adverse childhood event. Adverse childhood events are known to cause much of our burden of chronic disease, mental illness and are a root cause of most violence. A grieving child’s biography (life story) can become their biology (ie their response to disease, intensified stress response, and epigenetic changes). In this Hospice NZ breakfast session, Amanda will explore why we all need to play our part in supporting children who are grieving and share tips on how we can do that.
