DR ANDREW CHATFIELD, Coronary and Structural Interventional Cardiologist, Health New Zealand | Capital, Coast and Hutt Valley

Heart Valve Disease is a topic of growing importance for Aotearoa New Zealand. With our ageing population and high rates of cardiovascular disease, valve disorders are increasingly common yet often under-recognised in primary and rural settings. This session will explore how valve disease develops, key symptoms to look for, and modern diagnostic and management options — from medications to surgical and minimally invasive procedures. You’ll gain practical tools to support timely referral and better outcomes for patients and whanau, assisting equitable access to life-saving care across the motu.

Dr Andrew Chatfield completed his medical degree at the University of Otago (2010) and cardiology training at Auckland City Hospital, gaining FRACP in 2020. He then undertook a two-year fellowship in coronary and structural heart disease at St Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, working with world leaders in interventional cardiology. Since returning to New Zealand in 2022, he has practised in Wellington as a general and interventional cardiologist with expertise in coronary artery and structural heart disease, including TAVI, TEER, and ASD/PFO closure.
