Caring for those who are frail is complex, multifaceted and fraught with uncertainty. It requires interventions to promote quality of life despite frailty, as well as a palliative approach to care for months and possibly years before death. This care involves gerontology expertise as well as skilful palliative care that specifically addresses the needs of this population. This presentation will discuss the results of the “End of life with dementia research (ELDER)” that explored the quality of end-of-life care for those living in residential aged care. It will also highlight the changing demographic and complex nature of end-of-life care in old age and offer ideas for an integrated gerontology/palliative care approach.
