Olivia Sanders
Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist

Olivia lives in Christchurch with her husband Matt, 21 month old daughter Isabelle, and a highly anxious German shepherd, Obie. She has worked in paediatrics for the past ten years. Initially working as a Public Health Nurse, she then moved on to Paediatric Outpatients, and then the Paediatric Medial Ward and High Dependency Unit, eventually moving on to her current role as a Paediatric Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist. Olivia is also a research nurse at the University of Otago, currently working on a study utilising closed loop insulin pump therapy in high risk adolescents. Olivia was the previous Chairperson of the NZNO College of Child and Youth Nurses, and is passionate about providing equitable, empowering, and safe care to the children and youth living in Aotearoa

The topic will include:

  • This presentation covers the history of Type 1 Diabetes, basic pathophysiology, New Zealand statistics, an explanation of management of type 1 diabetes in the paediatric population in Canterbury, and common issues when taking care of a a children or adolescent with type 1 diabetes in New Zealand. Questions will be encouraged.
