Diathermy is used on the MSU to cauterise small blood vessels or cut through tissue when doing surgery.  It helps to reduce blood oozing in the surgical field.

As Circulating Nurse, one of your roles is to use the Diathermy machine.  As part of your induction prior to joining us on the bus, we have included some images taken on the bus outlining the process to help familiarise you – see the PDF below.

We also have a Smoke evacuator unit which is used in conjunction with the diathermy machine to remove the ‘diathermy plume’ which is created from the wound site.  This ‘plume’ is generated by the burning effect of using diathermy.  See the PDF below for images on connecting the Smoke Evacuator.
